IC:

Character name: Admiral Zhao
Fandom: Avatar: the Last Airbender
Timeline: end of season 1, post-"Siege of the North: Part 2" (post-death)
Age: mid-40s (headcanon, since it's never really revealed in the series)
~*Magical*~ abilities and strengths: Zhao is a Firebender, skilled in the creation and manipulation of fire for offensive fighting. Though he may not be a Master, he's a damned dangerous opponent, and fuels his pyrokinetic abilities with anger and rage. In an unarmed fight, he's also quite effective (so long as he doesn't lose his focus). He deflects both hand-to-hand attacks and spears easily in his canon. Zhao is also talented when it comes to military strategy, though he's not always the best when it comes to long-range plans.
How would they use their abilities?: For himself and for the glory of the Fire Nation. He's a selfish, often ruthless man, and if a tactic will get the job done, send a glowing report to the Firelord, and make his own position a little more comfortable, he'll do it. Firebending battles, bullying, and loud arguments are all distinct possibilities when Zhao's involved.
Appearance: The Admiral is a powerfully-built man in his mid-40s, and stands at about 5'8". Though his dark brown hair is receding a bit, he maintains himself in peak physical condition, and is fairly heavily muscled. Zhao is rarely seen without his full armor on and his hair and bushy sideburns neatly groomed. He is rarely seen to smile, and when he does, it's usually malicious.

Background/Personality: Zhao's entire life has been one of ambition and cutthroat competition. As a young man with a lot of raw talent for Firebending, he joined his country's military, the better to both serve his Firelord and the obviously superior nation of the three that still existed in his world. (There had, in the past, been a nation for each of the four elements--water, fire, earth, and air--as well as people who could manipulate each of the elements. However, the Fire Nation began to wage war on the other three in a bid for ultimate rule, and had committed genocide once so far, wiping out all but one of the peaceful Air Nomads.) Zhao studied under one of the great Generals of the Fire Nation, Jeong Jeong, but quickly grew bored of his Master's insistence that he learn discipline and patience in his bending. For the young recruit, destruction and raw force were far more attractive, and they have remained so to this day. Zhao gets what he wants through his own cunning, and, failing that, through bullying and intimidation. His temper is notoriously short, and it has been said by more than one person that the man has no self control of any sort.

A few years later, when stationed in the Earth Kingdom, Zhao's cunning made itself known again. Stumbling into the hidden library belonging to a great spirit who carefully guarded knowledge above all things, Zhao took advantage of the situation and studied as much of the library as he could, perusing scrolls upon scrolls until he came at last to one that held depictions of the Moon and Ocean spirits that the Water Tribes held sacred. The scroll also contained information that would nearly prove devastating for said tribes in the future: the locations of the spirits' mortal forms.

Zhao's arrogance is matched only by his narcissism, and it showed through in that moment. He decided then and there that it was his destiny to destroy the spirit of the moon, and become known throughout all of history as a conqueror and a hero of the Fire Nation. Every action that he took from there on out was to further than goal, and no other. He is driven by his desire for immortality, and lets nothing stand in his way. In one flashback in the show, where the Crown Prince of the Fire Nation, Zuko, is shown engaging in a Firebending battle with his father and is scarred by a blast of fire, Zhao is clearly shown in the crowd, grinning nastily and appearing to enjoy the scene almost as much as Zuko's sister, Azula.

Rising quickly through the ranks of the Fire Nation, Zhao had attained the rank of Commander and was in charge of a Fire Nation naval base when Prince Zuko, who had been banished and told not to return home until he'd found the Avatar, arrived, along with his uncle. Zhao appeared to respect the chain of command initially when he greeted the retired General Iroh, though there was something in his voice that suggested smugness on his own part at having the opportunity to become greater than the older man, who had suffered a crushing military defeat some years earlier. When Zhao discovered that the Avatar was alive, his drive to conquer and to succeed kicked in again, and he informed the Prince that he himself was going to go after the legendary figure. This resulted in an argument, which led Zhao challenging the Prince to a Firebending duel, or agni kai. When angered, Zhao has even less qualms about doing things that would seem highly unethical to others, whether consorting with pirates to further his own goals or, in this case, in challenging a teenager to a duel. Zhao eventually loses the duel, and uses the failure to fuel his own rage and continue on in his quest.

Zhao's ambition paid off when the Firelord heard of what he'd been up to, and he was promoted even further, to the rank of Admiral. Through several attempts to capture the Avatar, including one that involved a showdown with his old Master, it is made perfectly clear that Zhao considers peacefulness and a lack of ambition to be major failings. His old Master, a refugee from the Fire Nation, is proclaimed a "savage" by Zhao, and he very nearly bests him through the sheer force of his Firebending. At the same time, however, the fiery temper also shows through. Aang, the 12-year-old Avatar, bests Zhao by taunting him, and in his rage, Zhao ends up setting fire to all three of his own ships. Zhao also hired assassins to take out his competition, in the form of Prince Zuko. Though the attempt failed, Zhao didn't know this, and set out to his ultimate goal: the Northern Water Tribe, and the home of the mortal forms of the Moon and Ocean spirits.

Zhao's forces mounted a vicious attack on the North Pole, attacking during the day to capitalize on the fact that Waterbending is strongest at night, under the pull of the moon. Eventually breaking through the Water Tribe's front lines, the Fire Nation's frontal assault continued while Zhao and a small contingent of men slipped away to the Spirit Oasis to deal with the Spirits personally. Both the Moon and the Ocean had taken on the form of large koi fish, and Zhao easily killed the fish that was the Moon spirit's mortal form, negating all Waterbending and making the moon disappear from the sky. After fleeing the scene of the murder, Zhao encountered Prince Zuko who, having survived the assassination attempt, was understandably none too happy about the whole thing, and wanted revenge on Zhao. While the two fought, the Ocean spirit, angered, merged itself with the Avatar's spiritual essence and went on a rampage. The Princess of the Water Tribe eventually sacrificed her own life, bringing the moon back to sky. Zuko again defeated Zhao in their fight, and as he lay defeated before the Prince, the Ocean spirit scooped Zhao up in one of its massive hands. The Prince tried to offer Zhao a hand in assistance, but Zhao refused it, and sank beneath the waves, ostensibly drowning.

Have you read up on how the game works?: Yep! The plugin is Flaming Ferret, and Zhao can borrow/beg, steal/extort, or join missions to earn money to finance his takeover of everything and raising an army.

1st person sample: [Zhao is dressed, for once, in something that is not his armor. His new bosses at the coffee shop have decided that any clothing that ends up getting its barristas stuck in the doorways because it makes them to wide to pass through it is no longer allowed. Instead, there's a button-down shirt and slacks, with a bright green apron tied smartly about his neck and waist. His hair, however, is still pulled back in the regulation Fire Nation topknot.

Zhao looks very unamused, and frowns at the customer before him.]

"Please" isn't going to get you anywhere with me, I'm afraid. Fix your double-espresso grande latte yourself. I'm on break now, and I don't care if you have to wait.

[Grabbing the cup away from the customer as she attempts to force him to make her something, Zhao slams it down on the counter. He's really not happy now, and shows it. The paper of the cup catches fire, and quickly burns to ashes on the formica counter.]

I said I'm ON BREAK!

3rd person sample: Zhao stared at the room about him. Just stared for a good, long moment. Among other things, it was rather noticeable not the bottom of the ocean, where he'd expected to be. But then again, he'd also expected to be dead, and he was far from that as well. He drew a long, deep breath, and experimentally tried to create a ball of flame. It succeeded with no special effort on his part, and his smile grew wider and more calculating.

His current location didn't matter all that much to him, so long as he had his Firebending. There was a decided lack of snow here as well, which was another mark in the place's favor. The Admiral deplored snow, and had had far too much of it in the past several days. Though the room was bare, it appeared to be entirely his, at least for the moment, which was just as it should be. Striding confidently to the door, he turned the knob and walked out onto the railing outside his quarters, taking in the teeming city that he saw before him. All the better to conquer, really. He could ask questions later, but in the meantime, it was useful to know exactly how large this place was. He'd have to consult that strange device back in his room, and see what it could tell him about where he was.

All in all, this was a damned sight better than the bottom of the ocean.

Questions?: Can we have a dedicated agni kai ring on the ship?

Did you put your characters name and fandom in the subject: Yes indeed!
